Fertilising – why

Nutrition

When we think of feeding our lawns, we want the results that create a nice dark green colour that our neighbours are envy of.

Hopefully below will give you a better understanding of how a lawn needs feeding.

A lot of people think a lawn just needs feeding in spring and summer and that’s it. However, with the changing weather patterns, that creates a milder winter, its important to have a 12-month lawn feeding programme. This will ensure that the lawn never lacks any nutrients.

Fertilising Fertilising

Firstly you will notice there are different types of fertiliser that you can buy. Granular and liquid are the two main types. In short, liquid normally lasts around 4-6 weeks, depending on weather conditions, whereas, granular will or can last for up to 12 weeks. This making it a better option.

When looking at fertiliser you will notice on the label the letters of N, P, K, these stand for three most common nutrients that are blended in a fertiliser. It can be like a minefield when looking at the labels, so below I have explained what each main nutrient does

What do the different nutrients do?:

N – Nitrogen, this improves leaf growth and colour, aids in the recovery from wear and improves the sward density, which helps to keep weeds out.

If you are lacking in Nitrogen plant growth will be very slow and yellowing of the older leaves at first, then the entire plant will turn yellow.

P – Phosphorus, this aid the establishment, with helping the plant mature, this is also aid seed establishment, not good if your lawn has weeds.

If you are lacking in Phosphorus the older leafs will turn dark green, then following it the outer edges of the leaf will have a purple colour.

K – Potassium, Aid in the development of roots making them stronger and to root deeper and increases resistance to drought and diseases.

If you are lacking in Potassium the leafs turn brown with the outer edges looking burnt.

All in one Weed and Feed

You will see a lot of ‘all in one’ fertilisers available, these have a selective weedkiller in and Iron(Fe) to help with moss.

Fe – Iron, will help with moss control but will also give a nice colour to your lawn.

it also helps to unlock any nitrogen within the soil.

While these all in one fertiliser work to an extent, we recommend applying it separately as the effects are much better.

We use professional weedkiller to get the best possible results in one go, while our equipment is calibrated to apply the correct amount.  Saves wastage and helps protect the environment.

Make your lawn fertilising programme unique to your lawn,

The only way to find out what your lawn requires is to do a soil analysis, this will identify any deficiencies of the main nutrients.

We offer two soil analysis’s a basic one, which covers soils PH level, Phosphorus, Potassium and magnesium.

We also offer a broad spectrum one, which includes all of the above, but also includes, Calcium, Sulphur, Zinc, Manganese, Copper, Iron, Boron, Sodium and Molybdenum.

To carry out the tests we take a sample of soil and send it away for testing. When the results get back we then can design a specific lawn nutrition programme just for your lawn.  (click on the example PWS below to view a test already done)
